Growing up, I didn’t care about school. In 7th grade, though, my teachers said they would hold me back if I didn’t start trying. My parents pulled off a miracle – they started a reward/penalty system for me, tied to my grades. I would earn my favorite toys (robotics kits!) with good grades, and lose them with bad grades. And they didn’t need to do it for long! Within a year, I was motivated to do well in school and didn’t need any incentives. HOW?!
Fast forward to 2007. I took a graduate course in Motivation and Cognition and studied some of the most influential motivation theories ever developed. And it CLICKED! These theories explained why my parents’ strategy had worked, why I had struggled in my past relationships, and what I still needed to deal with in myself.
Now, a decade later, I’ve applied motivation theories to both my doctoral work and my personal life. And it’s INCREDIBLE. I feel like a totally different person! And I am able to help those around me in ways I never thought possible when I’m a teacher, a spouse, a friend, and a leader. And I hope to soon do the same when I become a parent!
Lately, though, I’ve looked around and realize that many people are where I used to be – in an apathetic or emotionally-driven state. Well, I decided to help, so I created Revolution for One.
